Auto GPS Reviews, TomTom One

I just moved to Houston and I was sick of having to print directions every time I went somewhere. What is even worse is how lost I would get with those directions. So I decided to look into a portable GPS for my automobile.

This is a GPS review in progress. I just purchased the TomTom One GPS. This unit retails for around $299 online and at stores such as Circuit City.

I liked this GPS because of it small size and flat screen. It can easily fit in your shirt pocket.

Plotting routes seems to be rather quick and the TomTom acquires satellite signal most of the time. I did have an incident where it took several minutes to find a signal.

The unit also kept saying my home address was about eight miles from where I lived. So I called TomTom support and they were rather helpful. The gentleman stayed on the phone with me for an hour walking me through the questions I had. One tidbit of info is there is an option to turn on full menus. This is nice feature which gives you many more configuration options.

One thing I have noticed is that the TomTom One has problems when inputting some addresses. I was able to get around this issue by looking up the restaurant as a POI.

The TomTom One could not find a street a friend of mine lived on. They were some other quirky issues I had which I felt were unacceptable.

I have decided to return the TomTom One and exchange it for the Harman Kardon GPS-500 Portable Navigation Unit with MP3 Player and 4-Inch Widescreen Video. This will cost an extra $100 bucks but this unit has stellar reviews and some really nice features.
