Hurricane IKE Poised to Wallop Houston, Texas – 2008

250,000 people in the Houston area are already out of power. It is predicted 1 million people will loose power due to the wrath of hurricane IKE. Some estimate it will take 2-3 weeks to restore power.
Report by click2houston.com – Hurricane IKE began battering the upper Texas coast with increased winds of 110 mph Friday evening while the monster storm narrowed in on a Galveston landfall, KPRC Local 2 reported.
At 9 p.m. Friday, the center of Category 2 Hurricane IKE was located at 28.5 north and 94.3 west, or about 65 miles southeast of Galveston. Its maximum sustained winds increased to 110 mph and IKE was moving west-northwest near 13 mph.
At about 600 miles across, the hurricane is a monster. The colossal storm is nearly as big as Texas itself.
A hurricane warning was issued from Morgan City, La., westward to Baffin Bay, Texas.
A tropical storm warning was issued from Baffin Bay to Port Mansfield, Texas, and Morgan City east to the Mississippi-Alabama border.
A tornado watch was in effect for southeast Texas counties until 10 a.m. Saturday.
IKE’s outer rainbands began lashing the upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts Friday evening.
White waves as tall as 15 feet crashed over Galveston’s seawall Friday morning.
Hurricane IKE is a very large hurricane with hurricane force winds extending outward up to 120 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds expend outward up to 275 miles.
The storm is threatening to give Houston its worst pounding in a generation
